Thwaites Village Hall is a vital part of our local community, providing a venue for many activities that bring residents together. The hall and playing field are managed by a small committee of volunteers who meet bi-monthly to discuss maintenance, projects, and events.
We are currently without a Chairperson, and by May 2026 we will also need a new Treasurer. The committee has worked hard for many years, but we urgently need new members to take an active role — particularly in these key positions.
Without enough volunteers, the hall could face closure. Please don’t rely on the same few people — your help is needed to keep this community facility open.

Nursery and Reception pupils have enjoyed mark making in glittery sand and creating patterns with shapes, colours, and objects. They also crafted imaginative “happiness machines” from recycled materials.
Class Two pupils delved into Roman history with a trip to the Roman Bath House at Ravenglass and a workshop at Muncaster Castle, complete with an owl display and park playtime. They have been reading Escape from Pompeii and studying skeletons, nutrition, and muscles in science.
Class Three explored Ancient Greece through creative writing, history, and art. They wrote diary entries inspired by the myth of the Minotaur, created Greek-style clay tiles, debated the best city-state to live in, and learned about Alexander the Great. They also took part in a tag rugby tournament at Millom RLFC.
Thwaites School held its Harvest Festival at St Anne’s Church, where children sang songs, shared autumn poems, and presented paintings of fruits and vegetables. Reverend Vic spoke about how people grow when given the right conditions. Food donations collected for the foodbank were gratefully received — thank you to all families who contributed.
Playgroup visits Thwaites School on 10 November to experience a new setting and toys. Regular sessions continue Mondays 10am–12pm during term time at Thwaites Village Hall. Cost: £2 per adult and child (50p per extra child). Includes a drink for adults and a healthy snack for children.
Take the bus to the Thwaites Bonfire Night! Operated by Millom Network Centre, £2 per person each way.

Each hall will show one film per week, pairing new and classic titles such as Belfast and The Commitments. A season ticket (£30) provides access to all films, or £5 per film individually. Supported by CGP Trust Fund.

Holcim (quarry operators) invite the community to celebrate the completion of Rock Park improvements. Following the event at Rock Park, refreshments will be served at Thwaites Village Hall. Parking is limited – please park at the hall between 9.30–9.45am. Shuttle transport provided.

The Dorian Players concert (1 November) advertised in last month’s issue is cancelled due to illness.
Following the September steel-signing event, construction of the new Millom Leisure Centre is progressing well. The steel frame is fully erected and anchored, masonry work on foundations is underway, and pool excavation has begun.
EV charging ducting, lighting, and footpaths around the community hub are complete. Front car park drainage and kerbs are in place, with groundwork now being levelled for the next phase.
The BEAT Route project continues to gain community support. The team is now seeking funding for feasibility studies for safe, family-friendly routes connecting schools, workplaces, and transport links.

A new bench has been installed west of Lady Hall at the top of “The Scar.” It provides a wonderful estuary view and is part of the ongoing Parish Council project to replace aging benches with durable, recycled-plastic models. All are invited to enjoy the view from this latest addition.
