We were bracing ourselves for a day of strong winds and heavy rain after a long stretch of lovely weather, but happily the afternoon of 7 June turned out much better than forecast for Thwaites Gala.
Although the morning weather may have deterred some, many people came to enjoy an afternoon of fun, entertainment, and community spirit.
Thank you to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes to organise the event, erect and dismantle marquees, arrange tables and chairs, provide refreshments, and run the wide variety of stalls and displays. Thank you also to all the performers and attendees who made it such a success. Same again next year?
Thank you to Thwaites School for hosting us again on 9 June. We enjoyed the change of toys and play equipment and the opportunity to join the nursery children in the school hall.
Our end-of-year party will be held at Thwaites Village Hall on Monday 7 July, 10am–12pm. Come and join us for a fun morning!

The sponsor money from Thwaites Nursery and Primary School’s “Walk to Remember” has been counted, and the school is delighted to announce that it raised £1,461 — with £1,095.75 going to the school fund and £365.25 donated to Help for Heroes in recognition of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Mr Redhead, Headteacher, said a huge well done to all the children and thanks to staff, parents, and carers who supported the walk.
Another year, another amazing Gala! The weather was kind and Thwaites School had a fantastic day running craft activities and chatting with parents and residents. Thanks to the organisers for including the school and to Mrs Barrow for providing the tent, activities, and sweets. Well done to the Gala Queen, who did the school and village proud!
Class One pupils have been exploring transport through the ages — from invading nursery in their Viking longboat to building wings from sticks and testing paper planes in the playground. Future engineers in the making!
Years 5 and 6 spent an afternoon using drills, hammers, and nails to make bird boxes as part of their science topic on living things and habitats. Thanks to Jack from Unit 3 for running the session. The finished boxes will be installed around the school grounds to encourage nesting.
Class One learned about resilience and teamwork by building an obstacle course and supporting each other to complete it. The session helped pupils understand the value of persistence and encouragement. Well done, Class One!

A new garden joins this year’s scheme! In addition to the two gardens in Lady Hall, Duddon Bank (LA18 5HT) — south of Duddon Bridge on the A595 — will also be open on the same day and times.
Parking is available in the adjacent lay-by (limited spaces at the top of the drive).

Work continues at the Old Bank (part of the Millom Town Deal), where construction has revealed fascinating parts of the building’s history.
The original vault door remains in place and will become a serving hatch for the new café. The old vault room, once filled with steel and concrete, will form part of the café extension.
An original fireplace on the second floor is being carefully restored and reinstalled to preserve the building’s character. The ground floor’s old safe will also remain as a feature — although, sadly, no hidden treasures were found!
These details bring Millom’s heritage into the heart of its regeneration, blending the town’s history with its exciting future.
